MADDEN EDGE

← Glossary

Zone read

QB reads the edge defender

Inside zone with the QB reading the backside edge defender: if he crashes, the QB pulls it and runs outside; if he sits, it's a handoff. Makes the defense play 11-on-11.

When it applies

With a mobile QB against undisciplined edges or slow scrape linebackers.

+ StrengthsCreates a numbers advantage; explosive keepers when the edge is greedy.
− Trade-offsExposes the QB to hits; a disciplined 'slow-play' edge defender kills the read.
