Step 1 — Count the safeties

1-high vs 2-high · the first read

Your eyes go to the safeties first. Two safeties deep = middle-of-the-field-open (the Cover 2, 4, or 6 family). One safety deep = middle-of-the-field-closed (Cover 1 or 3). No safety deep = Cover 0 or an all-out blitz.

When it applies

Every single snap — this is always read one, before anything else.

+ StrengthsThe fastest, most reliable pre-snap tell in football; it eliminates half the playbook in one glance.
− Trade-offsSafeties disguise: a 2-high shell can rotate to Cover 1 or 3 at the snap, and a 1-high look can spin back to 2-high.
