RPO (run-pass option)
QB reads a defender, run or throw
A run play with a built-in quick throw: the QB reads one conflict defender (usually a linebacker or safety) and either hands off or throws the slant/bubble behind him. The defender is wrong by definition.
When it applies
Against light boxes and single-high safety looks; 1st and 2nd down.
+ StrengthsPuts a defender in an impossible bind; easy completions that function as extended runs.
− Trade-offsTiming and spacing must be exact; aggressive safeties can blow up both options.
