Stroud Threw the Pick That Should Have Lost It. Then He Won It Anyway.
The Weekend Lesson · No. 2 · October 19, 2026 — Week 6: Houston Texans 34, Jacksonville Jaguars 31
Wembley got the weekend's best shootout. C.J. Stroud threw for 312 yards and three touchdowns, Trevor Lawrence answered with 306 yards and four scores, and the game still came down to two decisions: one deep shot Houston took when Jacksonville expected it to play safe, and one throw Stroud made right after the worst throw of his day.
Play one: the 50-yard answer before halftime
Jacksonville had just taken a 14-10 lead with 55 seconds left in the half, on Lawrence's second touchdown pass to Bhayshul Tuten. Houston could have knelt on the clock and taken the deficit into the locker room. Instead, on the first play of the drive, Stroud went deep — 50 yards to Jaylin Noel, who finished with a career-high 107 receiving yards. Eight seconds before halftime, Stroud found Foster Moreau from a yard out, and the Texans led 17-14.
That is the shot-play logic in our Air Raid guide: the deep ball is not a desperation call, it is a coverage tax. When a defense creeps up expecting the short, clock-safe throw, one vertical route changes the math for the rest of the game. In Madden, build that moment on purpose — show the safe look early, then take the shot when the safety steps down. One completion is worth more than the yards. It moves every defender back a step.
Play two: the pick, then the answer
Late in the fourth, Houston led 31-28 and was driving to close it out when Travis Hunter intercepted Stroud in the end zone. Hunter had caught a 7-yard touchdown on the previous Jacksonville possession — the first player since Brian Dawkins in 2002 with a touchdown catch and an interception in the same game. Cam Little tied it with a 60-yard field goal with 1:55 left.
Both halves teach something. The pick is the red-zone lesson in our Fangio Two-High guide: inside the 20 the field shrinks, the two-high shell becomes a crowd, and the quarterback has to thread a throw that was open at midfield. On defense in Madden, stay patient there and let the short field do the work. And Stroud's reply — a calm 19 yards to Woody Marks to cross midfield, setting up Ka'imi Fairbairn's 49-yard winner as time expired — is the rhythm answer from our West Coast guide: after a mistake, do not chase the hero throw. Take the easy completion, move the chains, win the game.
